Murphy Bed & Wall Bed Buyer’s Guide – Part 3, How much space do I need for this type of bed?
When choosing a wall bed for a room in your home, there several factors you need to take into account. The size of the mattress will be our starting point. A twin size mattress is 39" wide and 75" long. A queen size mattress is 60" wide and 80" long. The king size mattress is 76" wide and 80" long. With each one of these dimensions you typically need to add an additional 6" for cabinetry that encases the mattress and wall bed mechanism. The Slide Away version with base cabinets adds 31" to the width of each of these mattress sizes. Average depth of these fold down beds is about 21". The Slide Away Bed depth is 34" and doubles as a sofa. Please insure you have enough space to fold down or slide out the murphy bed mattress. If space permits, there are many choices of side cabinets and shelving to provide additional storage for this space saving furniture.
Note: If you have a room with a window and a fold up wall bed model is not possible, the Slide Away Bed can be centered right in front of this window without affecting form or function.
